Schulz Iron Works Intern Competes at National Bridge Competition In May 2016, Willis Swaringen, an intern working for Schulz Iron Works Inc., Raleigh, N.C., was part of a team representing North Carolina State University that competed in a national steel bridge competition in Utah. Sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and American Society of Civil Engineers, just 48 teams out of more than 200 were selected to compete at the National Student Steel Bridge Competition. The 2017 competition will take place May 26-27 at Oregon State University. Teams are tasked with designing and fabricating a 20 ft. bridge out of steel with members that are no longer than 3 ft. “Each year there are slightly different obstacles that cause you to redesign and innovate the bridge from year to year. After being built the bridges are load tested to 2,500 lbs. to test their strength. In order to win, the bridge must be light, stiff, look good, and be able to be built quickly,” explained Swaringen. For the last seven years, Schulz Iron Works has offered an internship program for students interested in careers in steel construction. Swaringen, who is seeking a degree in Civil Engineering, has worked at Shulz Iron Works during the last two summers and part time during the school year. “The internship allows me to get involved in a little bit of everything we do here and I have learned a ton about the construction world from being in the office and out in the field. Vice President Dave Schulz has been very helpful teaching me about the steel industry. He even helped out our steel bridge team this year.” “This is the first time in many years that a team from NCSU made it to Nationals,” said Dave Schulz. “We are really proud of the team’s achievements.”
