SEAA Education Committee to Award Craft Training Grant at 2017 Convention

The SEAA Education Committee will award a grant, not to exceed $4500, to a new participant in the SEAA/NCCER Ironworker Craft Training program. By becoming an NCCER accredited Training Unit (TU) and Assessment Site (AS), fabricators or steel erection contractors can provide their employees with valuable, industry-recognized training and credentials.

The Education Grant will pay for the initial TU/AS setup, and training for an administrator, instructor, and coordinator. It also covers the cost of instructor and trainee text books for Ironworker Levels 1-3 and electives.

Grant applications will be accepted from October 1, 2016 through March 15, 2017. Applications will be scored based on applicant’s collaboration and progress toward one or more SEAA Education and Training Committee Goals. The winner must be fully willing to partner with other SEAA members to provide regionally located training units and assessment sites throughout the United States.

“While our goal is to grow the Ironworker Craft Training program, Assessment Sites and Training Units are not limited to a single craft area. NCCER curriculum is available for over 67 craft areas,” said Tim Eldridge, Craft Training and Assessment Coordinator for SEAA.

SEAA’s expansion of Ironworker Craft Training and Apprenticeship options throughout the United States has been successful since introducing the program just a few years ago. Eldridge reported at the July Board of Directors meeting that more than 80 individuals have taken the Ironworker assessment to date. The average pass rate on first attempt is 55%, indicating the rigor of the exams. SEAA now sponsors 11 training units and 12 assessment sites. More than 40 individuals have been certified as instructors and performance evaluators. For more information about the program, contact Tim Eldridge at

The company selected to receive the grant will be recognized during the 44th Annual Convention and Trade Show, April 27-29, 2017 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
