Keynote Speaker Selected for 46th Annual Convention

Brent Darnell, a leading authority on Emotional Intelligence in the construction industry will open the Steel Erectors Association of America’s 2018 convention, to be held April 25-27, 2018 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

A second generation builder, Darnell earned a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1981 and began his own construction career. He was an MEP Coordinator and Senior Project Manager on complicated projects like the Brook Army Medical Center and housing for the 1996 Summer Olympic Village.

Because of these first-hand experiences, Darnell speaks with a deep understanding of his audience and the problems they commonly face. He has been teaching emotional intelligence and people skills to the construction industry since 2000, using proven methods to cultivate high performing teams on projects that use IPD, ILPD, Lean, BIM, Design Build and Design Assist.

In a recent blog post, Darnell said that back in 2000 when he first started talking about how emotional intelligence, collaboration and trust are the best way to approach projects, the more common reaction was to throw him out of the jobsite trailer.

“Now it seems that every single conference I go to from Construction Technology (AGC IT) to Owners (CURT and COAA) to Sustainability to Construction Research (CII) to Lean (LCI), to academia (PACE at Penn State and Auburn), EVERYONE is talking about collaboration, relationships and trust as foundation for great projects. The research at CII and Penn State and LCI bear this out. Relationships are drivers of project performance,” he said.

Then recently Darnell received an email from Harvard Business Review also touting benefits of emotional intelligence at work. “You know you have been legitimized when the Harvard Business Review pays attention to it,” he said.

Learn more about the typical profile of a worker in the construction industry in an interview Darnell gave to Engineering News-Record.
