New Crane Operator Certification Regs for Review in 2016 Tom Underhill, Executive Director, represented SEAA at the 20th Anniversary celebration of the founding the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators. Speaking at the event, Jim Maddux, director of OSHA’s construction directorate told crane industry leaders that OSHA plans to issue in 2016 a revision to the crane operator certification requirements, first introduced in 2010. The current rule is scheduled to go into effect in November 2017. The revision was undertaken to address concerns about how a crane operator is “qualified” and whether certification is equivalent to qualification. Once it passes through in-house review, the agency will release the revised language for public comment. Jim Maddux has worked closely with SEAA on this and other issues over the years. Due to retire the end of 2015, SEAA will look to forge new relationships with his replacement.
